Delfin Midstream has officially reached a $5 billion FID for its first FLNG vessel in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico—a groundbreaking milestone that marks the first FLNG facility in the United States and one of the largest FLNG projects worldwide.
The first vessel will have a production capacity of 4.4 mtpa, part of Delfin's broader 13.2 tpa development plan featuring three FLNG units. First LNG exports are targeted for 2030, with the facility located approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast of Louisiana.
The project is backed by a strong consortium of investors including BlackRock affiliate Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Mitsui OSK Lines, Vitol, and Diameter Capital Partners. Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a $2.9 billion EPCI contract for the vessel, following an extended letter of award signed last October. Siemens Energy will supply gas turbine mechanical drive packages, while Black & Veatch will handle topsides engineering, procurement, and commissioning.
Long-term sales agreements are already in place with major energy players Vitol, Expand Energy, Centrica, and Gunvor, ensuring offtake security for the first phase. Delfin is now focused on diligently advancing FIDs for its second and third FLNG vessels throughout the remainder of 2026.
This announcement comes amid a flurry of major FIDs in the U.S. LNG sector in 2026. Just last month, Caturus reached a $9.75 billion FID for the Commonwealth LNG project in southwest Louisiana, and Venture Global closed an $8.6 billion financing for Calcasieu Pass 2 Phase 2 in March.“Securing FID for our first FLNG vessel is a groundbreaking milestone not only for Delfin, but also for global energy security,” said Dudley Poston, CEO of Delfin Midstream.
As global demand for reliable natural gas continues to rise amid energy transition efforts, FLNG technology offers a flexible, cost-effective solution to unlock offshore resources. Delfin's project sets a new benchmark for U.S. offshore LNG development and will strengthen global energy security in the years ahead.
